Solo Founder OS

Updated

Public principles, constraints and open questions from building a one-person company.

Contents

Independent developer, solo founder and still a college student. These roles coexist, which means time, attention and product complexity all need deliberate limits.

This living note starts with principles I have expressed publicly. It is not a fully validated methodology.

Current principles

Build things that matter

A project should do more than prove that I can build it. It should answer why it deserves to exist. Dolang, dropdir and my agent work operate at different scales, but each starts with a concrete problem.

Code as art

I am not pursuing decorative complexity. I want to push the aesthetic to its limit: restrained and rational, technically deep and elegant. Websites, applications and systems tools may use different languages, but they should share the same standard of finish.

Do not reshape yourself for the crowd

I would rather find a few people who genuinely resonate with my work than keep changing my voice to reach a larger audience. This blog will therefore include technical work alongside emotions, relationships and everyday life.

Use AI, but keep engineering judgment

AI can multiply speed. It cannot replace an understanding of systems, security and responsibility to users. This matters especially in a one-person company: there is no other team to absorb the consequences of unreviewed technical decisions.

Still to work out

  • How to divide attention among the main project, tool experiments, writing and college;
  • how to define product boundaries a solo founder can maintain over the long term;
  • when to keep refining and when to publish and accept imperfection;
  • how to record decisions so my future self does not have to pay the same cognitive cost again;
  • which work belongs with agents and which judgments must stay with people.

I will revise this note as real releases, maintenance costs and product feedback provide better answers.
